The Faculty

Dr. Bruce James
Director

I am the Director of the Environmental Science & Policy (ENSP) program and a Professor in Natural Resource Sciences. I teach both graduate students and undergraduates regularly, and my courses include ENSP 101 (Introduction to Environmental Science); ENSP 400 (the Capstone in ENSP); ENST 421 (Soil Chemistry); and ENST 440 (Crops, Soils, and Civilization).

My love of the environment grew out of my hobbies while in college and my work with the Appalachian Mountain Club in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, biking, camping and kayaking with my wife and three sons.

Dr. Wendy Whittemore
Associate Director

I'm the Associate Director of the Environmental Science & Policy (ENSP) program, and am also the director of EcoHouse. I enjoy working closely with students in these programs and here in Environmental Studies! Between coming to the University of Maryland in 1983 and joining ENSP, I've held a number of positions in academic advising here on campus, including in the Division of Letters & Sciences.

My love of the environment grew out of youthful exploits in the fields and forests of central Massachusetts and on the waters off southern Maine. In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, and will climb almost anything if there is a view at the top!

You may contact me here: I have two offices and two telephones; therefore, it's easiest to contact me by e-mailing: wwhitte@umd.edu so I'm sure to get your message.

Ms. Nicole Wynands
Assistant Director

I am an international graduate assistant and the instructor of CPSP 239E. I am pursuing a Master's degree in Urban Studies & Planning with a specialty in Land Use and Environmental Planning, because I am interested in growth management and green urbanism as strategies to preserve our natural environment. I earned an undergraduate degree in International Political Management from a small college in Germany, and spent a semester abroad in India. Since I arrived there just days after the Tsunami, I helped rebuild affected fishing villages along the coast, which was a very rewarding experience. Service to communities and to the natural environment is an important part of my life, and I am glad to be able to share my passion for it with you in the Environmental Studies program.
